We try to eat organic foods. As much as we can. The problem is, we live on a small, remote island in the middle of the pacific ocean. So most things are imported, which gets very expensive, especially when you consider our location on the map. (As in, no bridges for semi-trucks, only pricey jet fueled planes welcome)
This is why eating locally grown foods has become so important to me. It's a win-win situation! The food is healthier because it's fresher, you're supporting local agriculture, you're reducing your carbon footprint, and most times it's cheaper because of the short shipping journey. What's not to love?
I was doing most of our shopping at Mana Foods; which is our best health food store on the island. It is awesome! BUT, it's 25 minutes away. Some of you are laughing. But that is FAR when you live on a tiny tropical island. Plus, SURPRISE! Gas is expensive here too.
So you can imagine my delight when a girlfriend of mine (thanks Angeline!) turned me onto a local produce delivery service called Kula Fields. I can have fresh, organic Maui grown, fruits and veggies delivered to my door step once a week? What???
This is our 4th week, and I am loving it. It's $40 per box and almost everything is organic/non-sprayed. (The strawberries, bell pepper & missing sweet onion were conventionally grown) Let me tell you my friends, that is a good deal for home delivered fresh organic produce here on the island.
And my repertoire of dishes is flourishing! Every week it's a new variety of fruits & veggies that I might not normally have bought, hence the trying of new recipes. For example, it would have been eons before I got around to trying the "Kale and Bacon Adobo" recipe that turned out to be DELICIOUS.
Do yourself (and your local farmers and your planet) a favor and eat local organic foods!
